WHAT GOT YOU INTO SHOUJO:

Truly a befitting question to wrap up the challenge! Well Shoujo actually offers me the genres that helps me calm down and enjoy the rest of my day (Well, night), namely Romance, Comedy and SoL. So the straight answer would be that I got into the Shoujo genre because of my liking for these genres that happens to be a sub part of it. The answer to how/what got me into all these calm genres lies in something that happened in the past.

Shoujo isn’t just a genre……. It’s an emotion

So, back when I was in the 3rd or 4th grade, I wasn’t really that good in English. I mean, yeah academically it was good, but it wasn’t good enough for me to be fluent in it for day to day life use. At that time, my mom literally forced an idea onto me, for which I will always be thankful to her. She told me to start watching Hollywood films. Why? Because on hearing their fluent conversation and by reading the subtitles, my English might improve! She gave me some usual movie titles like the Harry Potter series, the Twilight series, some Disney works and so on. Since these were all new to me, I got fascinated by the new world and gradually shifted from the Indian media to the western one. Thanks to those early selections, my choices in film got centered on the usual RomCom genre. I actually did try other genre, but my love for romance was just vast that it couldn’t be helped.

However, this love of mine was partly the reason why I got hung up in anime (I advise you guys to read HOW I GOT TO LOVE ANIME as this post will help you understand the references of the coming sentences). When I watched 5 cm per second, I was interested into the new form of entertainment because of the fact that it portrayed pure romance, the one that comes with the pain of heartbreak (On a side note, Makoto Shinkai’s amazing animation was also part of the reason). Agreed that Death Note was my first anime series, and maybe if I searched for series more like it then I probably would have leant more over to the shounen genre. But let’s not forget that I was urged to pursue anime only because of my fateful encounter with Hayate: The Combat Butler (Romcom, SoL) and Letter Bee (Fantasy, Action); If only I wasn’t curious to know what’s going to happen in the 16th episode of the former series maybe I would have fallen for the Fantasy action genre.

Well, there really are many possibilities that could have sent me to a track different from my current one; still, I am here today because of all those small events that paved the path for me to love the Shoujo genre the most. Now, to answer the question: My mom is indirectly responsible for getting me into the world of Shoujo.

  1. Congratulations on completing the challenge woohoo 🎉🎉🎉
I loved the way you decribed how you got into this genre. I saw 5cm per second as well, abd thought it was amazingly beautiful. Even though it was a short film, it impressed me so much more than a full movie at times could do. Breathtaking animation combined with a truly beautiful story made it into something that I won’t forget any time soon.
I enjoyed this series. Looking forward to what you will come up with next 😀

Well we have to admit, Shinkai Makoto is really a magician and can cause wonders with that skill of his! I’m glad that you liked it too.

Glad that you liked it and I’ll be sure to post something better next time. See you soon!
