Some Underrated Anime You Should Check Out!

After I ended the torture series (Kuzu no Honkai), I found some series which I have not heard about from many people; in fact, they were either personal recommendation or just a lucky encounter in Google. When I completed them, I realized that these works are quite exquisite but failed to make the cut only because of lack of recognition or promotion. That’s why, today I would be writing about some underrated anime which deserves to be checked out. So without any delay, let’s get right into it.

  • Spice and Wolf:

If you have been following my blog for quite some time then you are sure to have come across this name before. This anime is basically about a merchant who decides to drop a Wolf deity (In female form, of course) back to her home in the North while fighting off various business related problems with their combined wisdom; a romantic plot is also followed which basically gets spotlight in the second season. The beauty of this anime is that it manages to keep us at the edge of our once you start watching it for real (Even though it may seem monotonous at first). Not to mention that Holo (Wolf deity) is seductive, even though she isn’t that lucky in some proportion :3
So yeah, do give this anime a try if you like the slice of life genre with occasional stressful moments.

  • Welcome to the NHK:

Image result for welcome to the nhk

It’s the oldest anime in this list and maybe that’s why it’s not that much known among the current generation; but that doesn’t means you should ignore this series. The story is about a college dropout, Satou, who has now become a Hikikomori or a shut in. One day, he is approached by a high school girl, who keeps persuading him to let her help him as she has full confidence that she could turn him into a normal guy once again. Even though he came up with various excuses at first, he eventually agreed and thus, started their counselling to turn the perverted shut in into a confident normal adult. Welcome to NHK is sure a pain to deal with in the first 3 episodes, thanks to Satou’s cringe worthy decisions and delusions. But once things get settled up a little, then we start to enjoy the situations Satou goes through as well as the romance that stirs up between him and Misaki, the female high schooler. The idea adopted was quite new to me, but then again, it was a really good anime that could use some recognition too.

  • Uchouten Kazoku:

    Related image

A few months back, Karandi recommended me to watch this series. Even though I downloaded it some days after that, I decided to watch it a lot later; and I do not regret that decision. Set in Kyoto, The Eccentric Family is about a Tanuki (The animals who stroll the land while having the power to shape shift), Yasaburou, and his daily adventures as he deals with his master, the Tengu (The creatures who fly in the sky and regard themselves better than humans and Tanukis) who can’t fly anymore, his 3 brothers and mom while handling the constant trouble caused by the branch family, the Ebisugawa’s, and continue interaction with the humans (Those who are practically stronger than the Tengus and Tanukis and are also known to devour Tanuki). The interesting thing about this series is that it manages to get us habituated to their absurd world as if it’s not a big deal and lets us understand the problems that the family runs into from time to time. The art style of this anime is pretty unique and has a refreshing feel to it. I recommend this anime to anyone who would like to loosen up a bit with a normal family drama mixed with a little bit of fantasy.

  • The Tatami Galaxy:

    Image result for tatami galaxy

I found this anime in a post of Goboiano which gave us a list of anime with an out of the box animation style. While most of the titles in that anime looked pretty much normal to me, the art style of The Tatami Galaxy stood out way too much. I downloaded it thinking it to be a short series or that maybe the story will be complete shit; I was wrong. The story is about a college freshman who desires for a rose colored college life and on his attempt to find that, he chooses different clubs only to get wasted every time at the end of two years. However, every time he reaches that time and asks for another chance, he travels back to the very first day of colleges and chooses a different path (Of course, he has no idea of that fact; even though he gets a feeling as if it has happened before from time to time). To be honest, the concept really blew my mind; who would have thought that an anime with that kinda art style has a foundation like this (Now that I think about it, the art style is not bad…. it’s different). The interesting part is that even though the basic story is repeated is repeated every episode, with some changes in the follow up, we don’t get bored of it and actually ask for more (Provided that you have the talent of not bailing out in the very second episode and can read subtitles really fast because damn the dialogues are fast). I would recommend all of you to watch this anime more than any other in this list and would advise you all to watch it to the end as it would all be worth it then. If you haven’t watched this then you’re missing out on an amazing experience in the anime world.

And that sums up my list for some underrated that you should check out. What do you think about this list? Are you familiar with any of these series? Are there any more series that should make the cut? Let me know in the comment section below! Thanks for reading!

My Top 5 Anime Mother

“Look at the date, it’s Mother’s Day!!”- Is something that my mom might say any moment now but I guess she’s just taking her time figuring out if I remember it or not (Rest assured mom, I do have a present for you…….. I’m just waiting for the right time).

Hello everybody, it’s Ryuji Tatsuya and today I will be writing a ‘Mother’s Day Special’ post as a tribute to all the lovely angels in the world who sacrifice most of their needs just to keep their children happy. Anime has portrayed moms in almost every way possible; Gentle and kind, Self-sacrificing, Free loading and careless, Drama queen and in some cases, Cruel af too. Of all these unique characters, today I will be pointing out 5 of them who were able to make me realise how important a mother is in our life. So without any further delay, let’s get right into it!

  • Yasuko Takasu (Toradora):
Image result for Ryuuji Takasu's Mother
The list starts with Ryuuji’s mother Yasuko from Toradora. Although she isn’t that popular for portraying a responsible mother, she sure is known for her loving nature. No matter how childish she gets we can never get angry on her, she’s just that special. She’s not the only single mother in Anime history but what makes her special is the fact that she isn’t perfect and that’s how our moms really are; their imperfection makes them the perfect mother for us.
Image result for Ryuuji Takasu's Mother
  • Sanae Furukawa (Clannad):
Image result for sanae furukawa gif

Moving on, we have Nagisa’s mother Sanae Furukawa from Clannad. Sanae is maybe the meekest mother I have ever seen, in real life or anime. No matter how much we love our mom, let’s be honest, she gets pretty scary at times (Even more if someone else tries to interfere), however this mother……. What should we do to get her angry? (Not at her husband, but at her child). I really liked the part where she would get really dramatic and run out of the shop every time Akio said something about her cooking; it kinda also showed her sensitivity and childish behavior. But the reason I included her in this list is because she accepted to take care of Ushio after the tragedy in Tomoya’s life; being a mother once again to the child which was partly the cause of her daughter’s death needs a really big heart and an even bigger courage.
    Image result for sanae furukawa

  • Naruto:
Image result for kushina and naruto gif
Maybe the most loved mother of all time, Kushina deserves all the praise and affection she gets. Growing up as a Jinchuriki and then sacrificing her own life just for the better future of her child needs an incredible amount of love and guts. Maybe she wouldn’t have been the most ideal mother if things were different (As shown in the film ‘Road to Ninja’) but no matter what we say, she is the best mother that could handle a problem child like Naruto. She wasn’t given as much screentime as Minato, but even within that little time her character and story made me feel lucky to have a mother and give my mom a big hug.

  • Nobuko Izumi (Parasyte):
Image result for nobuko izumi gif
Then we have Shinichi’s mother from Parasyte. We all know the fact that there wasn’t any strong female character in the series who could deliver a good impact on the viewers, except Tamiya Reiko. But the reason I’m putting Shinichi’s mother in this list is because she is really crucial for the plot development of the story. I admit that her character wasn’t that developed but that doesn’t stop us from feeling Shinichi’s pain in the scene when the parasyte, who took over her brain, attacks him. The attack was ironical but the speech he delivered before experiencing the fatal blow, while ignoring Migi, was a really impactful scene.
Image result for izumi shinichi mother
  • Clara Jeager (Attack on Titans):
Image result for eren and his mom gif
At last, we have Eren’s mother from Attack on Titan is another example of self-sacrifice. Unlike other series, she wasn’t even given one complete episode to develop her character and relationship between her and Eren. But still, when she sacrifices herself to the titan just so Eren and Mikasa can get to safety shows her extreme mother nature and has a great impact on us, mentally. What actually made me like her more than Kushina is the fact that Kushina was shown dying with a smile on her face, she was satisfied by the fact that Naruto will live. However, if you remember the scene when the titan was about to eat Eren’s mom, it didn’t show satisfaction, it showed fear; She wanted to live too and that, in fact, is the reality. No matter how many time we say that a mother would readily sacrifice herself for her child (Which is true), we have to remember that she is a human too; she wants to live too. The slap of reality in that small scene made me like her more.

With that I will be ending this ‘Mother’s Day Special’ post. Be sure to let me know which anime mother you like the most. Thank you all for reading!

30 Days of Anime Challenge (Post 24)

Good day to all of you, It’s Ryuji Tatsuya with the second post of the day for the ‘30 Days of Anime Challenge’. Today, the topic we’re gonna talk about has some pretty shocking spoilers, so If you don’t want to be spoiled, don’t read this post! You have been warned~

Most Shocking Moment In An Anime:

When I saw this topic for this post I thought, “Was there any moment when I was shocked?” and to find the answer I went through all possible nominees, basically the sad anime like ‘Your lie in April’, ‘Kimi no na wa’ and some sports one like ‘Haikyuu S1’and stuff. However, I more or less knew what is gonna happen in all these anime. But the one series I chose for this segment shocked me not only once but today again too. What is that anime? Keep guessing. (Hint: It’s an underrated one)

The anime series that had the most shocking scene for me, is a little underrated series called ‘Tokyo Ravens’. I have talked about this anime many times in my previous blogs, because I really liked it and maybe I would be the happiest person on Earth if it got its much needed second season. But today, what I’m gonna talk about is something that happened in episode 20. I just randomly clicked on this episode and I was watching the scenes where Harutora was forced to wear the Raven cape and he got berserk and all and then I remembered the horrific shock that I received when I watched it for the first time. There was this scene after the one I mentioned where Natsume jumped off from sky (While riding her Pegasus K) at Harutora and kissed him to remove the seal that was limiting his powers. However, while doing so, she got hit a couple of times with his berserk mode attacks. I was actually thinking that it won’t be a big deal cause the injuries didn’t seem to be fatal. But then BOOM! She died. Yeah, I know right….. WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF???????!!!!!!!! Probably the biggest shock I got in my anime watching career.

And with that I’m gonna end this shocking second post of the shocking Anime Challenge. Be sure to tell me your most shocking moment in anime, in the comments below. Thanks for shockingly reading this blog!

30 Days of Anime Challenge (Post 19)

Hallo-Hallo everyone; It’s Ryuji with another double post of the ‘30 Days of Anime Challenge’. At the end of the second post, I will be sharing with you guys a possible hurdle that MIGHT stop me from posting for a few days. But that’s in the end, let’s focus on the current topic for now!

Most Epic Scene In An Anime:

I have been asked this question about a million times now; and every time, my one and only answer is a particular scene from ‘Death Note’. Yes, Death Note because no other thriller anime was able to excite me as much as this series. Now, I’m sure there are thousands of epic scenes from this series like when L *********** or when Light ********** and many other scenes (Big spoilers censored due to public request XD). But which scene I’m a big fan of? Let’s see.

Remember the scene where Light and L gave their speech in the university’s Entrance ceremony? Just after that, L starts to blurt out all his info about Light (Like he usually does). L then calmly asks him if he could say something regarding the Kira case he is solving and as soon as her got the permission he turned his head and said, “I wanted to tell you that, I am L”. GOD FU***NG DAMN IT!! That scene gave me goosebumps. It’s so freaking awesome!!! I love how L just says it without giving a shit and it feels so good to see Light goes into a panic attack after he reached home (Even though I like him more than L XD).

And with that, I’ll be ending my post for this topic. Be sure to describe your most epic scene to me in the comments below. Thanks for reading!

30 Days of Anime Challenge (Post 15)

What’s up everybody; it’s Ryuji, with the 15th post of the ‘30 Days of Anime Challenge’. Finally, we are halfway through the challenge. Guess I’m not doing that bad. Anyway, let’s not break the momentum and continue with the challenge!

Favourite Anime Pet, Summoning or Sidekick:

Now that’s an off-beat question. In most of the anime, all we talk about are the main characters, antagonists and at most, the supporting characters. However, today that I got a chance to tell you guys about my favourite Pet, Summoning or Sidekick; I will be going with the Summoning category.

The summoning that I’m gonna talk about today is from an action based anime series called ‘Strike the blood’. There aren’t that many anime where the main character is a vampire, are there? I liked the story, even though it had some unnecessary ecchi scenes, 40% because of the story and fighting stuff, but 60% because of the awesome familiars. I love his 3rd dragon familiar ‘Al-Meisa’ which was summoned by him in the third arc? Dunno. (For those who didn’t realise yet, I usually get enthralled by dragons, that’s why I have the name Ryuji) But seriously, that dragon was created into such a fine one, the CG work was good, its power of warping and devouring void spaces was awesome and the animation style was just breath taking. (The sheer description I gave of him right now makes me wanna watch it again)

And with that, I’m ending this segment of the anime challenge which now kind of looks achievable. Be sure to tell me about your favourite pet/sidekick/summoning in the comments below. Thanks for reading!

30 Days of Anime Challenge (Post 5)

Heyyo! It’s Ryuji with the 5th post of the 30 Days of Anime Challenge. Slowly, I’ve realized why this post is said to be a challenge. As the numbers of days are increasing, it’s become hard to keep on posting. But now that I have the time, let’s not waste a single moment and get on with the main topic!

Anime You Are Ashamed Of Enjoying:

I consider today’s question quite insensitive for anime viewers like us. No anime should ever be cursed or blamed by anyone because the creators actually put a lot of effort to present us with that work. (Of course I have some universal exceptions too, Boku no pico and Mars of Destruction. DON’T YOU DARE WATCH THEM; YOU WILL BE TORTURED TO DEATH!!) However, the anime I am going to talk about today is different because I am ashamed that I ‘Enjoyed’ it. (Which was not the case in the above two anime)

The answer of this question will be ‘Letter Bee’. If you guys know me, Tegami Bachi (Letter Bee) was one of those anime which were the reason that I got to know what anime actually is. I had a hard time finding the series and I enjoyed both of its seasons. It had an unusual charm to it; a magical and really beautiful supernatural touch which I never saw before. But, looking back, I am ashamed of liking it because of the fact that it was not able to answer all those questions which were raised in the first season. The second season is just an illusion that makes you feel satisfied at first, but if you take a long look at it overall, you feel cheated. Many answers, many mysteries, many ships which were aspired were totally trashed and the anime was ended with a note which made sure that there will be no continuation. For me, this anime just reflects on how much of a novice I was before and how have I grown in these past years.

And with that, I’m gonna end this short post to answer an insensitive question. Be sure to share your views about my answer and tell us what your answer would have been to this question. Thanks for reading!

Attack on Titan (First Impression)

Anime: Attack on Titan

That’s Awesomeness!!

A Hundred of years before, first appeared the Titans, a giant like monsters whose only aim was to prey on live humans. After bringing the whole human race to the verge of extinction, the survivors were able to defend themselves by trapping them inside an area defended by three walls. After this mishap, humanity has now experienced peace. Eren, Mikasa and Armin are a group of three friends living in this era of peace, but still Eren and Armin yearn to venture outside these huge walls and want to join the Scout Regiment who are able to do so. However, this moment of peace and dreams were short-lived, because suddenly a Titan, called the collosal titan, of height more than the 50m wallcreated a hole in the wall and allowed many other Titans to devour these humans. In the state of aggression, panic and a state of emergency,  Eren along with Armin and Mikasa decides to drive out every titan from their land and joins the cadet training group to do so.

‘Attack on Titans’ won over a million hearts of the anime community on its release in the year 2013. Even though the fact that I avoid action and gore anime is still there, I couldn’t turn a deaf ear to all the other bloggers and anime viewers who can’t help but praise the series. But while I’m watching it, I realise that unlike my most resented gore anime, Mirai Nikki, this show is actually able to make those scenes legit. I’m now watching episode 5 and I have to admit that the series has made me sit to the edge of my seat. It’s been a long time since I actually enjoyed an action anime and maybe that’s the reason for everyone’s complimenton the series.

I heard about the anime for a really long time, but the main reason I started watching it was its live action movie. At first, I thought that the live action was pretty good, so I was bound to check out the real thing; however, now I think that the live action was pretty shitty compared to the anime. The story is better, the action scenes are good, the characters are good, the OP/EDs are amaizing and the best thing of all is that there are no annoying dialogues in the middle of the fight. So, I expect that the series will turn out as good as everyone told me and that I will be eager for the second season scheduled to release this April.

To The Forest of Firefly Lights (Anime Review)

Name of anime: Hotarubi no Mori e

Review: Anime never stops fascinating me. No matter if it’s a series, movie or short OVA, they somehow manage to give us a unique piece of art, and that uniqueness is what makes anime, ‘Anime’. Somehow, this month of December, has made me think about anime more differently than before; maybe because I gave more time to anime films than series. It makes me wonder how the 45 minutes long film, ‘To the forest of firefly lights’ made me relive those emotions which I encountered when I watched the 24 episode long ‘Your lie in April’. This anime is one of those films which won’t be there in the top 10 or 20 anime movie list, but is surely one which will leave a deep impact in your heart for the rest of your life. The story is of narrative style and is told by a High school girl named, Hotaru. When she was 6 years old, she visited her uncle’s house in the summer and wandered off into the forest while playing. There, she met Gin; a spirit which looks like a young boy of 16. Both of them started to hang out, and promised to meet each other every summer. As Hotaru starts growing up, she starts having feelings for Gin, but she shudders to succumb to those feelings, she can’t touch Gin because if she does, Gin will get obliterated. This short but romantic movie is to die for and as long as you are in love with anime, this movie is one which you definitely can’t forget to check out.

Best scene: The anime shared one joke when Hotaru was little. While Gin was taking helping her out of the forest, she said, “It’s just like a date” to which however, she got a reply that it’s not so romantic. Ten years later, when both of them are in a summer festival (Organised by the spirits, of course) she once again said, “It’s just like a date” but this time the reply was, “This IS a date”. That scene was the best romantic scene of the movie.

Favourite character: The female character in this anime had a powerful and leading role which was carried out nicely, but somehow it failed to be as impactful as Gin. Though he always wears a mask (Makes me think that he was an ANBU member from Naruto) his face, when revealed, was perfect for the character. His voice acting was great to bring out his loneliness and craving to touch a human.

Art style: A good art style, perfect for a romantic-sad anime movie. I loved the fact that they used their time to focus on vivid colours of forest flowers and fireflies to increase the impact of the movie. What I loved in this movie was Gin’s character, it was so well made that I can’t even consider anyone else for the favourite character nomination. Overall, the art style was something that suited the anime plot nicely.

Gaps: Every time Hotaru came to his uncle’s house, she would go to the forest and hang out with Gin. Though it seems easy, it’s still hard to digest the fact that she would remain outside all day, every summer, for 10 years but yet no one ever judged or asked her about it. Except that fact, I have no more point which made me twitch in the middle of the movie.

Rating: ‘Hotarubi no mori e’ is a romantic movie with that late sad element which makes us cry and wish for a happy and satisfactory ending. Though the ending actually pretty good, knowing the fact that, that kind of ending was inevitable, a little prologue of hope never hurts anyone, so I rate it 8 out of 10.

A big thanks to Arria Cross for recommending me this anime, knowing your taste I knew it would be a great watch and hopefully it did. Thanks again and wishing you all a belated Merry Christmas.

Parasyte: The Maxim (Anime Review)

Name of the anime: Parasyte: The maxim

Genre: Action, Sci-fi, Horror, Romance

No. of episodes: 24

Review: Most animes start with a definite theme and plot, but by the time it ends, the conclusions somehow become totally different from what was expected. But Parasyte, isn’t one of them. It started with a clear question and quest for the protagonist and ended with the same message and conclusion. This anime focuses on Shinichi, his parents, Kanna, and to some part Shinichi’s girl friend Murano. The basic plot is that a parasitic creature (Maybe alien) falls from space one night. Their mission was to burrow inside a human, capture its brain and control the body. However, one of them tried to burrow inside Shinichi but wasn’t successful and could only get into control of his right hand. Shinichi names him Migi. Migi is probably the most practical and logical character I have ever seen in my life. He has the perfect excuse to tear all of our ‘Normal’ and ‘Ethical’ things into pieces. But, in time, after living with Shinichi for a long time, they finally formed a partnership and decided to eliminate all the trouble causing ‘Parasites’. This anime has somehow balanced action, romance and science in the perfect proportion, and that’s what makes this one of my favorites.

Weakness: This anime doesn’t have so many mistakes.
1) Its ending was a little bit forced and the last episode’s purpose was not clear.
2) Shinichi’s girlfriend, Murano, really bores and makes me angry by a certain question. Even though at first it was okay, but with time, the question became too frequent, “You are Shinichi Izumi, right?”
3) Except Reiko, there wasn’t any strong female characters to leave their mark.

Best scene: This anime has a load full of great scene in action and all, but the best scene for me would be when Shinichi attacked the parasyte as Migi said for the first time. I was really pumped up when he actually hit A and it was well delivered when he was just abandoned by Reiko. HUMAN-1, PARASYTE-0.vlcsnap-2016-12-06-22h37m51s795vlcsnap-2016-12-06-22h38m16s434

Favourite character: It goes without saying, my favourite character if Tamura Reiko. According to me, there was not any other character in the sidelines who could leave as big of an impact as she did. Also, and it might seem weird to you guys, I think she is hot XD

Art style: I actually liked the art style of the anime pretty much. It was detailed, clear and beautifully scary. An action-gore based anime couldn’t get a better art style. Even tough it would have been better if Murano was created more pretty, but it will do for now.vlcsnap-2016-12-06-22h37m07s652

Rating: It’s a great action anime and maybe the only anime which I liked even though there were many gore scenes. I would recommend it to everyone. My rating to Parasyte is 8 out of 10.

PS: Also, check out the opening song of the anime. I loved it. Check it out on This Link!

Your Name (Anime Review)

Name of Anime: Your Name

Review: How good it feels when you are rewarded for a long wait by something which completely exceeds your expectations! That’s what that happened with me. I waited almost 6 months for this anime to be available for download, and when I was finally able to watch it, what I found was maybe Makoto Shinkai’s best work. I don’t always watch anime films, but when I do, it’s mostly Makoto Shinkai’s work. It’s not unknown to the anime community how great his works are, sometimes it’s so real that I couldn’t believe my eyes. This time, I didn’t get a great print, but still ‘Your name’ was fabulous in both the script and art. The story is about two persons, Mitsuha and Taki. Even though they live pretty far away, their souls suddenly starts to switch. At first, they take it as a dream, but gradually they realise that it is true and do their best to support each other. Gradually, they become suited to the other’s body and grow feelings for each other, but something happens which marks a big change in both of their life. I loved how the anime turned from a light hearted comedy to a serious love plot, which at times was able to make me sob. But still, I was completely satisfied by the plot, which made my decision to wait patiently for the anime, a right one.

Comedic scene: When Mitsuha switched into Taki’s body for the first time, a scene made me laugh real hard. If you are familiar with the feminine and masculine tone of the word ‘I’, then I’m sure you have laughed at the joke too.vlcsnap-2016-12-02-20h08m35s009

Favourite character: The focus was at the two characters all the way, even though Taki was more on spot, I really fell in love with Mitsuha. She looked sooooooooooooooooo good, I can’t explain in words. One may say that, Okudera (Taki’s crush) was better, but once you see Mitsuha in the Shrine maiden outfit, you will have to fall for her. At least I did.

Art style: Do I need to say anything in this matter? I watched the film in a really low quality mode, but still I was able to live at that moment, due to its realistic nature. If Makoto Shinkai is the creator, I could rate the art style 10 out of 10 in no time.

Gaps: ‘Your name’ was really a good anime, and the only time I felt that there is some gap, was the plot twist, which failed to deliver a good explanation about the uncertain events that occurred. In any case, the matter about time was too hard to understand, or maybe, it was made hard to understand to cut out on the explanation part.

Rating: The best anime film I have ever watched till now. I know some say that it is being over exaggerated by the reviewers, but still my own rating is 9.5 out of 10.

So, what do you think about ‘Your name’, was it good or average or bad? Be sure to tell me your views. Thanks for reading this blog! J
